Steps to apply for a USA B1/B2 visa in India

[gp-social]

The USA B1/B2 visa process in India is a four-step process:

  • Filling DS160 form
  • Appointment booking
  • Submitting biometrics
  • Visa interview

In this article, I will share my experience and all the research I have done to get a 10 year US visa so that  you’ll get a clear idea of how to apply for a US visa.

1 – Filling DS160 form

The DS160 is an online nonimmigrant visa application form, used for temporary travel to the United States. To download this form you need to create an account in the US Department of State website and start filling out.

In this form, you will need to fill the details such as your personal information , job, education, travel, etc.

You must be careful and accurate while filling DS160 because this is the form the visa officer will have in front of him/her during your US visa interview. So your answers need to match with what you filled in the DS160.

Also, every person applying for the US visa should fill the form individually. So if you are a family of 3 members, then you have to fill out three separate DS160 forms.

Important note – Don’t forget to save your DS160 and keep it on your drive or laptop, because you must know what you have filled in your ds160 for the visa interview.

2 – Appointment booking

This appointment is for submitting your biometrics and for giving the visa interview.

Currently, the US visa process in India is being conducted in 5 metro cities as follows – Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata. You can choose the center which is most convenient for you

Once you book an appointment, you will get two dates. The first one is for biometric and the second one for the visa interview. You can select them on consecutive days or even give them a day’s gap if you want.

After booking an appointment you will be asked to pay the visa fee, which is approximately Rs.12,000/- per person.

Also, each person applying for the US visa must reserve the appointment individually. So if you are applying to a family of 3 members, all three will need to book appointments separately.

3 – Submitting biometrics

This process involves submitting your fingerprints and photograph in the biometric center. It is a simple process which takes about an hour, depending on the number of people scheduled for the day.

Your passport will be verified and a sticker will be placed on the back with all your details. Post this  you will be called to give the fingerprints of both hands. Your photograph will be taken, which will be used for your visa.

Few tips for the biometric process:

  • The biometric center may be different from your visa center, so double-check it
  • You only need to carry a passport and a copy of the appointment letter.
  • Arrive 10-15 minutes before your appointment time

4 – Visa interview

This is a 1: 1 visa interview with the embassy officer, where you will be asked questions on topics like your purpose of visit, duration of stay, your job, family or   life in India.

This process can take about 2-3 hours, moving from one line to another. But the actual interview is only 10 minutes.

You will need to carry certain documents to the interview process such as passport, appointment letter, DS160 form, and all supporting documents.

The interview is the most crucial part of the visa process, which will determine whether you get a US visa or not. So you have to be well prepared for it

This is the step-by-step process for applying  to the US visa. I hope this article has been useful to you and  has given  you a clear picture on how to go about it.
