The officer's job is to verify that your business is real
The first thing to understand is that for startup employees and founders, the officer's primary goal is to establish the credibility of your business. This is different from what a salaried employee at a large corporation faces. Because startups are newer and less well-known, you should expect direct questions about how long your company has been in operation and how many employees it has. These are not trick questions — they are the officer's way of confirming that the organisation sending you to the US actually exists and is functioning. Know these numbers cold before you go in.
Be ready with your financial numbers
The second area the officer will focus on is your company's financial standing. Expect questions on your turnover, your profit, and whether your startup has received any external funding or investment. If you have raised a funding round, be prepared to mention it — it actually strengthens your case because it signals that an independent third party has validated your business. Do not go into the interview unsure of these figures. Review your company's financials beforehand so you can answer clearly and confidently.

The third area is your user base. Officers may ask how many customers or clients you serve, how many active users you have, how many subscribers you have, or how many registrations your platform has recorded. For a startup, this is one of the clearest ways to demonstrate real-world traction. Before your interview, pull together whichever of these numbers is most relevant to your business and be ready to state them clearly.
How this affects your DS-160 and interview profile
All three of these factors — business credibility, financial numbers, and user base — should also be reflected in how you fill out your DS-160 and any other application or interview profile you complete. What you write there sets up what the officer will ask you. Make sure the information is consistent and that you can speak to every number you have put down. Inconsistencies between your written application and your spoken answers are one of the fastest ways to create doubt in an officer's mind.
