ECFMG is now issuing the DS-2019 for the full length of your training program
Until recently, ECFMG issued the DS-2019 one year at a time, which meant you had to go through the renewal process repeatedly throughout your residency or fellowship. That has changed. ECFMG is now issuing the DS-2019 through the end of your entire training program. So if your residency or fellowship ends in 2028, you can now get a DS-2019 valid until 2028 — not just through 2027 as would have been the case before.
Why this matters — especially after what we saw this year
A longer DS-2019 means you can also get your visa stamp valid through the end of the program. That is a big deal. This year in particular, I saw many renewal J-1 physician visa applications get rejected — and that is exactly the kind of disruption this update helps you avoid. With a full-program DS-2019 in hand, you reduce the need for constant renewals and repeat visa stamping appointments. It also makes it far easier for you to plan your travel and move in and out of the US without the anxiety of wondering whether your paperwork will be ready in time.
What you should do right now
If you are currently on a J-1 physician visa, contact your program coordinator and request the updated DS-2019 that reflects the full end date of your training. When you come in for visa stamping, make sure you are presenting this updated document — not an older one-year version. If you need help with the DS-160 form or want to prepare for your visa interview, reach out to me directly and I can walk you through the entire process.

Does having more than one I-20 hurt your F1 visa chances?
If you applied to several U.S. universities and ended up with multiple I-20s, you are not in trouble — having more than one I-20 is completely normal, and it does not hurt your visa chances.
