The travel ban is lifted — here is what that means for valid visa holders
Starting November 8, the travel ban that had been in place for 18 months was officially lifted. If you already hold a valid US visa, you are now eligible to travel to the United States. This is the headline update, but there are equally important changes to appointment availability, vaccination requirements, and travel guidelines that you need to know before you book anything.
F1 student visa updates
November and December are the priority months for student visas
The Embassy confirmed that November and December are the two months they are focusing on processing F1 student visas. If you are heading to the US for the Spring 2022 intake, you should know that there will be no bulk slot releases like there were for the Fall intake. Instead, regular slots will be released every day across all consulates in India.
When to check for appointment slots
One very practical detail the Embassy shared: you do not need to be checking the system at midnight or at 5am. Slots are typically released around 9 to 10am across all consulates in India. That is the window when I would recommend logging in and trying to book.
You can book at any consulate — not just your hometown one
The Embassy's preference is that you attend an interview at the consulate closest to your home location. However, they have explicitly clarified that if you cannot find a slot there, you are completely free to book at any consulate across India. Keep your location flexible — wherever you can get an appointment, go for it.
Full vaccination is now mandatory for students
During the Fall intake, students could travel to the US and get vaccinated on arrival. That option no longer exists. You now need to be fully vaccinated before you travel — that means two doses of either Covishield or Covaxin, and at least two weeks must have passed since your second dose. Both vaccines have been approved. There are no exceptions to this requirement for students.
B1/B2 tourist visa updates
Do not expect a B1/B2 appointment in November or December
I know many of you have been waiting very patiently for B1/B2 appointments, so here is the honest picture: November and December are reserved for student visas and some H and L visas. Getting a B1/B2 appointment during those two months is extremely unlikely. January onwards is when B1/B2 slots will open up, and the booking windows for those January, February, and March appointments should become available sometime in November or December. Plan your timeline accordingly.
Those late-2022 appointment slots? Leave them alone

Book a Mock InterviewIf you have seen October or November 2022 appointment slots in the system, do not book them for a regular B1/B2 interview. The Embassy clarified that those dates exist specifically as placeholders for people seeking emergency visas — to get an emergency appointment, you first need any regular appointment in the system, and then you can request to expedite it. Those late-2022 slots will eventually be cancelled. Stick to looking for January, February, or March appointments.
Dropbox appointments are coming back — with expanded eligibility
Starting from January, Dropbox appointments will become more frequent and easier to access. There is also an important eligibility update: if your B1/B2 visa expired within the last four years, you are now eligible to use the Dropbox process. That means you do not need to come in for an in-person interview — you can renew your visa by dropping off your documents.
If your case is stuck in 221G or admin processing
A lot of you have messaged me about applications sitting under 221G or administrative processing with no update. The Embassy acknowledged that they do have a significant number of such cases waiting. Once the student interview rush is over, they plan to allocate resources specifically to clear this backlog. Updates will come either by email or through a status change on the Embassy website — so keep a close eye on both of those.
Travel guidelines if you are heading to the US soon
Whether you are a student or a visitor, here are the travel rules currently in effect.
Vaccination: both Covishield and Covaxin are approved
You need to be fully vaccinated — two doses and at least two weeks since your second dose. Covishield received emergency use approval recently, so both Covishield and Covaxin are now accepted. Either one is fine.
No quarantine required — but a negative COVID test is mandatory
There is no quarantine requirement when you land in the US. However, a negative COVID test is mandatory both for boarding your flight and for clearing immigration on arrival. This applies to children as well — even if they are not vaccinated, they must have a negative COVID test. Do not overlook this for younger family members.
National Interest Exemption (NIE) is no longer needed
Many people have been asking whether they still need to apply for a National Interest Exemption before travelling. The answer is no. With the travel ban lifted, the NIE requirement has been completely removed. You do not need to apply for one separately.
H and L visa updates
If you are waiting for an H or L visa appointment, there is positive news. Even in November and December, a good number of H and L appointments are already being scheduled, and availability is only expected to increase in the coming weeks. The wait should be coming to an end soon.
