The embassies are still open — here is why slots feel impossible to find
The first thing I want to reassure you about: the US embassies in India are not shut. Interviews are being conducted as normal. What has changed is the volume of slots being released, particularly for F1 visa interviews, which dropped dramatically in September 2021. There are two clear reasons for this.
The first reason is that the peak season for Fall 2021 has already passed. The bulk of students who needed to get their visa and start their courses in the US have already been processed. From the embassy's perspective, the heavy lifting for this admission cycle is done.
The second reason is directly connected to what happened in June and July. If you were following along at the time, the US Embassy in Delhi announced in a Facebook Live that they would release thousands of extra slots every single day through June and July, with embassy staff working extended hours to clear the massive backlog that had built up. That backlog existed because so many applicants could not attend their interviews in 2020, and again missed the window for Spring 2021. To fix this, the embassy pumped an extraordinary number of appointments into the system — which is why slots felt relatively easy to find through much of the summer.
Now those extra slots have stopped. The embassy has returned to functioning in a limited capacity — similar to how things looked right after the initial lockdown reopening. Slots exist, but they are scarce, and competition for them is high.
Four things you can do right now to find a slot
1. Keep your location flexible
I hear from many applicants who are determined to get their interview only at one specific embassy — Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, wherever it may be. I understand the preference, but when slots are this limited, holding out for one city is going to cost you precious time. Check availability across all embassies in India and be genuinely willing to travel. The appointment matters more than the location right now.

Book a Mock Interview2. Do not get yourself blocked — space out your checks
This is something a lot of applicants do not know: if you check the appointment portal more than three times in a single day, the system will block you for 72 hours. That is three full days during which you cannot look for a slot at all — and in a scarce environment, that could mean missing one. Be strategic. Spread your three daily attempts across the day so you are covering different windows without triggering the block.
3. Join the Telegram groups for your city
There are active Telegram groups specifically for F1 visa slot availability, organised by embassy location. People in these groups share updates in real time whenever new slots appear, which gives you a significant advantage when you are limited to three portal checks per day. I have listed several of these groups in the resources section of this site. Join the ones relevant to your location, stay active, contribute when you spot availability yourself, and use the information from the group to time your portal checks wisely.
4. Request an emergency appointment if your class start date is close
Many applicants are not aware that the emergency appointment option is still available to them. If you are running out of time before your programme start date and cannot find a regular slot, you are well within your rights to request an emergency appointment through the US embassy portal. I have a separate detailed guide on exactly how to go about this — look for it in the Interview Preparation section of this site.
Use the waiting time to strengthen your preparation
While you are searching for a slot, do not let your interview preparation slide. I would actually argue the opposite: the harder it is to get a slot, the stronger your preparation should be by the time you walk into that interview room. Use this period to structure your answers, organise your funding plan, and make sure your documents are in order.
If you want to prepare with me directly, you can book a one-to-one consultation where I work through your answers and funding plan according to your specific profile and admit. You can also book a mock interview with me — this is something I genuinely believe is a game changer, because the questions are tailored to your profile and to the specific embassy where your interview will be held. It gives you a real feel for the actual interview environment and builds the confidence you need for the day itself.
