What the US Embassy actually said — and what it means
Before every major intake the US Embassy holds a Facebook Live event where they lay out their plans for slot scheduling. For Spring 2023 the original plan was two bulk slot openings — one in October, one in November — and a third opening in December specifically for students with a previous refusal. The reality turned out very different. By late December, there had been only one proper bulk opening (which came late, towards the end of October) and two smaller mini-openings in November and December. The result: roughly 60 to 65 percent of Spring 2023 applicants managed to secure a slot, but 35 to 40 percent — including many students with a prior refusal from 2022 — are still waiting.
The embassy holds a Visa Q&A session every Friday where students ask questions live. In the most recent session the vast majority of questions were about slots — and the embassy's responses followed a standard line: capacity is limited, we are doing our best, and most slots for December and January are filled. That reply understandably sent a wave of panic through applicants. My inbox filled up with students concluding that Spring 2023 was completely over for them. I want to push back on that conclusion, and here is why.

My answer is: not necessarily over. There is still a real chance that more slots will appear, and I say that based on three specific reasons.
Reason 1: The embassy's own screenshots say 'keep tracking'
Buried inside those same Friday Q&A replies — alongside the discouraging capacity comments — are messages telling students to keep logging into the system. The embassy explicitly states that they do release slots in bulk, and that when a bulk opening happens, slots go fast within one or two days. So from the embassy itself, the message is: do not stop tracking. That is not the message of an organisation that has closed the door entirely.
Reason 2: The same thing happened for Fall 2022 — and more slots came
Look at what happened during the Fall 2022 intake. Around August the embassy put out a communication saying they had processed most Fall intake visas and were essentially done. A significant number of students still had not been interviewed, including many with a previous refusal. Then, around the 15th or 16th of August, the embassy released another bulk slot opening that covered the bulk of those left behind. History suggests the same pattern could repeat for Spring 2023 — another mini bulk release towards the end of December or into January is a real possibility.
Reason 3: Students are booking slots right now, today
Every single day I see students successfully booking interview appointments. Some are tracking the system themselves, some are part of Telegram groups that share live updates, some are using agents or third-party services. However they are doing it, they are getting in — which tells me that slots are still entering the system, whether through cancellations, small embassy releases, or both. The pipeline is not frozen.

1. Sit tight for the next 10 to 15 days
I know how exhausting this uncertainty feels. Not knowing whether you will get to sit that interview — whether your Spring plans are going to happen at all — is genuinely stressful, and I am not going to pretend otherwise. But the next 10 to 15 days are critical. This is not the time to give up. Whatever you are currently doing to track and secure a slot — keep doing it, and do it consistently. One thing worth noting: most of the recent slot availability has been concentrated at the Mumbai and Kolkata embassies, so if you have flexibility, prioritise those locations when you are checking.
2. Apply for an emergency appointment
An emergency appointment is an option built into the CGI portal that lets you formally request an expedited interview slot. The best part: it costs nothing and there is genuinely no downside to applying. It does not hurt your application in any way. You can initiate the request directly from your CGI portal. 3. Do not rush to a third country — but do talk to your university
A lot of students ask me about travelling to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, or Singapore to give the interview there. Honestly, I have not seen good results through that route. Many Indian students have tried it for Spring 2023 and the visa approval rate when applying from a third country has not been encouraging. The embassy has also previously stated that they do not encourage travelling to a third country solely for a visa interview. My advice: keep trying to secure a slot from India.
What I do recommend is talking to your university — not just about an extension but about alternative intake options. Many universities offer a summer intake or an early fall intake where classes begin in March, April, or May. That is only a couple of months after your original Spring start date, and it could serve as a strong fallback that keeps your US education plans on track. Ask your university whether this option is available to you.
4. Use this time to strengthen your profile
This one is the most important and the most overlooked. In the scramble to get a slot, visa preparation tends to get completely sidelined. Students secure a date and then realise they are not ready. If you have time on your hands right now, use it. Review your profile honestly — is there an internship you could add, a relevant online course you could complete, a stronger admit you could explore? Could your overall story for the visa officer be tighter and more convincing? The bottom line
The Spring 2023 slot situation is genuinely difficult, and I will not minimise that. But based on what the embassy is actually communicating, what happened during Fall 2022, and what I see happening on the ground every day, I do not believe the door is closed. Keep tracking, apply for an emergency appointment, explore your university's alternative intake options, and use any waiting time to get sharper on your interview preparation.
