She came to the US on an F1 visa, completed her master's degree, worked through OPT, and then had her H1B picked in the lottery. She transitioned to H1B status and kept working — never once returning to India for a stamping trip. After nearly eight years in the US, she finally came back to India to get her H1B visa stamped. Her case is more common than you might think, and the interview reflected exactly that.
What the consular officer focused on during the interview
The officer's attention was almost entirely on one question: why did you stay in the US for so long without coming back to get your visa stamped? There were multiple cross-questions on this point. It was not a casual check — the officer pressed on it from different angles. Thankfully, we had anticipated this and she was fully prepared. She got her visa approved, but I want you to understand how closely this line of questioning was pursued so you do not walk in underprepared.

Over the last two to three months, I have noticed a very high focus at consular interviews on any previous travel or extended stay in the US. If you are applying for a work visa — whether H1B or L1 — and you have a long history of living or working in the US, you must prepare thoroughly for questions about that history. The length of your stay will be scrutinised. Do not assume the officer will move past it quickly.
What you should do before your interview
If your situation involves a long or continuous stay in the US, prepare a clear, honest, and consistent explanation for why you did not return for stamping sooner. Think through every angle an officer might probe — because they will. This applies whether you are on an H1B or an L1 visa.
