Step 1: Choose your third country based on wait times and travel feasibility
The first thing you need to do is look at the current appointment wait times and figure out which country actually makes sense for you to travel to. Right now, the lowest wait times are in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Bangkok. Cross-reference that with what travel is realistically possible for you — visa requirements to enter that country, flight costs, how long you can stay — and then make your decision.
Step 2: Set up your CGI Federal account for the new country
Once you have picked your country, go to the CGI Federal website for that specific country and create your account there. If you already have a CGI Federal account from your India application, you cannot simply use the same one — you need to transfer it to the new country. Do not skip this step or try to work around it. After your account is set up in the right country, pay the visa fees. This is a point that catches a lot of people off guard: even if you already paid the visa fees for India, that payment is not valid for a different country. You will need to pay again for the new location.

Book a Mock InterviewStep 3: Fill a new DS-160 — and keep it consistent with your old one
Yes, you need to fill out the DS-160 form again for the third country. This is not optional. But here is the critical part: keep your answers consistent with any DS-160 forms you have submitted before. The visa officer at the new consulate can still pull up your old forms and compare them. Any inconsistencies — even small ones — can raise questions you do not want to answer. Review your previous DS-160 before you fill in the new one.
Prepare for one question the officer will almost certainly ask
This is the one interview question you absolutely must prepare for when applying from a third country: "Why are you not applying from your home country?" The officer will want to understand your reason, and a vague or unprepared answer can hurt you. Think through your honest answer in advance — whether it is the wait times, travel plans, or another legitimate reason — and be ready to explain it clearly and confidently.
