How do I get an emergency visa appointment for Spring 2022 intake?

If you have been waiting months for an F1, J1, or M1 visa interview slot and your Spring 2022 programme start date is closing in, an emergency appointment may be your fastest path to the consulate — and here is exactly how to apply for one, step by step.

Watch this guide as a video

I know how frustrating and draining this process can be. Many of you have been refreshing the CGI portal for months, watching slots disappear before you can click them. The good news is that over the past few weeks, a number of students have successfully applied for an emergency appointment, had it approved, and secured an interview slot in time for their intake. Below I walk you through every step of that process.

Step 1 — Book a regular appointment first (your placeholder)

Before you can request an emergency appointment, you must have a regular appointment already on the books. Log into your CGI Federal portal, pay the visa fee, check availability across all consulate locations, and book whatever date you can find — even if it is in mid-2022 or even 2023. This booking is just a placeholder. The date does not matter at this stage; what matters is that an appointment exists on your account.

I want to be honest with you: even getting this placeholder appointment is difficult right now. If you do not see any slots on your first attempt, do not feel defeated. Keep your location flexible, check multiple cities, and keep trying. Patience here will pay off.

Step 2 — Submit your emergency appointment request

Once the placeholder is in place, log back into your account and look for the emergency appointment option on the left-hand side of the portal. Click it and a form will open — this is your formal application to the consulate requesting an earlier slot.

What to include in the form

The form has several fields. You will need to enter a tentative travel date and select the visa category you are applying under. The most important part is the description box — this is where you explain why you qualify for an emergency appointment, and you need to put real thought into what you write here.

Structure your description in bullet points. State clearly:

• When your programme start date is
• Why you need to be on campus by that date
• How an emergency appointment is the only way you can start your classes on time

Do not leave this vague. The more specific and well-organised your case, the better your chances of approval.

Book a Mock Interview

Even though attachments are marked optional, I strongly recommend including every relevant document. Attach your I-20, your DS-160 confirmation number, and your SEVIS fee receipt. Technically you do not have to pay the SEVIS fee until biometrics, but paying it before you submit the emergency request and attaching the receipt makes your application look more complete and serious. If your university has sent you any email confirming that you need to be on campus by a specific date, include that too — and reference it in the description box.

Step 3 — Wait for the consulate's reply

After you submit the form, the wait begins. In most cases, if the emergency appointment is approved, you will hear back within one to two working days. The response comes as an email from the consulate stating clearly that your request has been approved and instructing you to reschedule your existing appointment.

Step 4 — Reschedule your appointment before the deadline

Pay close attention to the deadline stated in the approval email. The consulate's approval is only valid until a specific date — in recent cases this has been December 31 — and if you do not complete the rescheduling before that deadline, the approval expires.

Once you have the approval, go back into your portal. You will now see a set of dates that are reserved exclusively for emergency appointments — these were not visible to you before. The choices may be limited, but they are real and available. Pick the date that works best for your travel plans, confirm the reschedule, and print your new appointment confirmation letter. Bring a copy of that letter with you to the consulate on interview day.

Once your slot is confirmed — make every second count

Getting the appointment is only half the battle. Once that slot is yours, your preparation needs to be thorough. You have worked hard to get this interview — go in completely ready to face the visa officer.

If you need help drafting the emergency appointment application itself, I offer a service specifically for that — the link is in the description. For interview preparation, I run a 90-minute workshop that is designed to get you fully ready for the day, and I also offer one-to-one consultations and mock interview sessions. Both have helped a large number of students walk into the consulate with confidence and structure in their answers.
