What kinds of questions are being asked at L1 visa interviews now?

L1 visa interview questions have gotten significantly more technical — and if you are still preparing the way most people do, you may be caught off guard. Here is what officers are actually asking in 2024 and how to get ready for it.

The standard preparation is no longer enough

For a long time, preparing for an L1 interview meant rehearsing answers about your job title, your responsibilities, and your expertise. That is still important — but it is no longer sufficient. Interview patterns are changing, and officers are going a full level deeper than they used to. They are asking about your specific day-to-day work, your place in the organisation's hierarchy, your actual decision-making authority, and the technical or managerial details of what you do. This shift makes sense when you consider that blanket visa rejections are high right now. The L1 is becoming more selective, and officers want to be certain that you have genuinely done this work — not that the company has simply filed a petition on your behalf.

Recent L1B interview questions — what officers are actually asking

If you are applying on an L1B for specialised knowledge, expect questions that go well beyond 'describe your role.' Based on recent interviews, here are the kinds of questions officers are raising:

• What exactly does the platform do?
• Explain the architecture.
• Which component did you develop, and how?
• How does this service communicate with that service?
• What happens if your component fails?
• What technology did you use — was it proprietary or open source?
• Why couldn't another engineer do this work?
• How did you acquire this expertise?

These are not abstract questions. Officers are probing whether you understand the system at a level that only someone who built or maintained it would know. If you cannot explain the architecture or describe your specific component's role, that is a red flag for the officer — regardless of what is written in your support letter.

Recent L1A interview questions — it is not just about headcount anymore

For L1A applicants coming in as managers or executives, there is an important trend to know about. Officers are no longer satisfied with hearing how many direct and indirect reports you have. They are now asking about the full organisational hierarchy — not just who reports to you, but who you report to, who that person reports to, and so on up the chain. Beyond that, expect questions like:

• Do you conduct performance reviews?
• Who controls the budget?
• Which decisions can you make without your own manager's approval?
• How much of your day is managerial work versus operational work you do yourself?

That last question is particularly telling. Officers are trying to determine whether you are truly functioning as a manager or whether you are primarily an individual contributor with a senior title. If a large portion of your day is spent doing hands-on operational tasks, you need to be prepared to address that honestly and in context.

What this means for your preparation

The depth of these questions means that walking in with a vague sense of your own job description will not cut it. You need to know your story in detail — your profile, the specifics of what is written in your support letter, and how to articulate all of it clearly under time pressure. These are skills that come from deliberate practice, not just reading your petition documents the night before.

If you want structured help with this, I do one-to-one preparation sessions where I help you frame your answers, build your story, and run mock interviews so you are not hearing these questions for the first time at the consulate window.
