Arrive one hour before your appointment time
Your appointment confirmation page will show a specific time — plan to be outside the Mumbai Embassy at least one hour before that time. You will not be let inside immediately. The doors typically open and they begin letting applicants in around 30 minutes before the listed appointment time. Arriving early gives you a buffer so that any last-minute delays — traffic, parking, gathering your documents — do not make you late.
The document verification counter — your first stop inside
Once you are inside the embassy, the first thing that happens is document verification. You will approach a counter where a staff member checks your paperwork. Make sure everything is in order before you walk in — this is not the place to be scrambling through your folder. After verification is complete, you are directed to a waiting area.
The waiting room — expect 30 to 45 minutes here

Book a Mock InterviewThe Mumbai Consulate has a designated waiting area with chairs where you sit after your documents are verified. The typical wait here is anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes. Use this time to stay calm, go over your key talking points mentally, and avoid anxiously rehearsing every possible question. Most people find the waiting room more stressful than the interview itself — try not to let it get to you.
Joining the queue for the visa interview
When your turn comes, you will be called to join a queue that leads into the main room where the visa interviews are conducted. You will be directed to a specific queue to meet your visa officer. This is where the actual F1 interview takes place — you speak with the officer at a window, answer their questions, and present any documents they ask for.
Total time: plan for 45 minutes to 1 hour
From the moment you step inside to the moment you walk out, the entire process at the Mumbai Embassy is currently taking between 45 minutes and 1 hour. That includes document verification, time in the waiting room, and the interview itself. Block out that window in your schedule and let whoever is waiting for you know not to expect you sooner.
