What happened at a real visa interview
I just finished a one-on-one session with a client who had his visa interview recently. He told me that the officer asked him directly: which social media platforms are you active on? On his DS-160 form, he had declared only LinkedIn. When the officer discovered he was present on other platforms as well, she did not simply move on. She asked him to resubmit his DS-160 form — updated with every social media handle he is active on. He walked out of that interview with a 221g slip in his hand, with a clear instruction to resubmit the relevant DS-160 pages after adding all his social media details.
Why this matters for your DS-160
The DS-160 asks you to declare your social media presence, and officers are cross-checking what you write against what they find. If there is any gap between what you declared and what is discoverable, it raises questions about your honesty — and that is the last thing you want sitting across from a visa officer. A 221g is not an outright refusal, but it delays your visa and puts your application under additional scrutiny. The safest thing you can do right now is go through every platform you use — Instagram, Twitter/X, Facebook, YouTube, Threads, or anything else — and make sure each one is listed on your DS-160. If you are active on it, declare it.
What to do before your interview
Take this seriously even if your interview is weeks away. Go back into your DS-160 and update all your active social media handles before you submit — or before you attend the interview if you have already submitted. Do not leave any platform out because you think it is minor or rarely used. The officer's question to my client was not vague; it was direct and specific. Be just as specific in your answer, and make sure your form matches what you say in that room.
