What documents do I need for the US visa Dropbox process?

The Dropbox document list is shorter than most people expect — but missing even one item can derail your appointment. Here are the five documents every Dropbox applicant needs, plus the category-specific add-ons depending on your visa type.

The five documents every Dropbox applicant needs

Regardless of which visa category you are renewing, these five documents are required for everyone going through the Dropbox process.

1. Your current passport

Bring the passport you want the new visa stamped in. If you have any old passports, bring those along as well.

2. DS-160 confirmation page

Print and bring the confirmation page from your completed DS-160 application.

3. Appointment confirmation page

You will need the printed confirmation of your Dropbox appointment.

4. Photos

Bring two photographs that meet the US visa photo specifications.

5. A copy of your existing US visa — and possibly the old passport it was stamped in

Book a Mock Interview

This one is critical and specific to Dropbox. The entire Dropbox process is built on the fact that you already hold a valid US visa — so you must bring a copy of that existing visa. If your current visa was stamped in an older passport that you have since renewed, you need to bring a copy of both the visa and the passport it appears in. This is something many applicants overlook: just because you have moved to a new passport does not mean the old visa record disappears — but you still need to physically show proof of it.

The sixth document: category-specific add-ons

On top of the five core documents, you will need one or more additional documents depending on the visa type you are applying for. Check the category that applies to you below.

F1 student visa

If you are renewing an F1 visa, bring a copy of your latest I-20 and proof of your latest SEVIS fee payment.

H-1B work visa

For H-1B renewals, you will need your Form I-797 approval notice and an employment verification letter.

J1 exchange visitor visa

J1 applicants should include their DS-2019 form in addition to the five core documents.

A quick summary before you pack your documents

To recap: five documents apply to every Dropbox applicant — current passport (plus old passports if any), DS-160 confirmation, appointment confirmation, two photos, and a copy of your existing US visa (with the old passport if the visa is in a different one). Then add the documents specific to your visa category. Keep the list simple, check it twice, and you should be well prepared.
