The DS-160 mistake that almost derailed a real L1B applicant
I recently worked with a client preparing for his L1B Blanket visa interview. He works for a large natural services firm and had filled out his DS-160 form several months earlier — then forgot to save it properly. By the time his interview was approaching, he had no memory of what he had actually written in the form. He was going into one of the most scrutinised visa categories with a foundational document he could not verify or stand behind. Fortunately, his biometric appointment had not yet taken place, which meant he still had the option to update and re-submit his DS-160 before that stage. We used that window to get the form right.
Why the DS-160 matters more for a Blanket petition than an Individual petition
If you are going for a Blanket visa petition, I cannot stress the importance of the DS-160 form enough. With a Blanket petition, the level of scrutiny from the consular officer is higher compared to an Individual petition. The officer is going to use your DS-160 to determine whether you genuinely fall into the L1B or L1A category — and they will be looking closely. A vague or incomplete DS-160 gives them reason to question your eligibility on the spot.

Your DS-160 needs to clearly reflect your specialized knowledge and expertise. This is not the place to be generic about your role. The officer needs to see, from the form itself, what makes your knowledge specific to your company or industry and why it qualifies as specialised under the L1B definition.
If you are applying as L1A (Manager or Executive)
Your DS-160 must capture your managerial responsibilities clearly — your team, the people you manage, the budget you oversee, and the executive or managerial decisions you are responsible for. If that information is missing or buried, you are asking the officer to take your word for it rather than letting the form speak for you.
The one thing you should do right now if your interview is coming up
Pull up your DS-160 and read it carefully. Can you confirm that every answer still reflects your current role and responsibilities accurately? If you filled the form months ago and have not looked at it since, you may be in the same position my client was — walking into an interview without knowing what you submitted. If your biometric has not yet been completed, you still have time to update the form. Do not waste that window.
