When will F1 visa slots be released for Spring 2023?

If you have been refreshing the appointment portal every day and seeing nothing, you are not doing anything wrong — F1 visa slots follow a predictable seasonal pattern, and right now you are in the quietest stretch of the year.

Why you are not seeing any F1 visa slots right now

September is what I call the lull period for F1 visas. From April through roughly August, a massive number of F1 visa slots are released and a huge volume of interviews are conducted. Once that wave clears, the consulates quiet down significantly. In September, the very few slots that do appear are almost entirely for B1/B2 visitor visas or work visas like the E and L categories. F1 slots are extremely rare during this window. So if you are staring at an empty calendar, please do not panic — it is completely normal.

When can you expect F1 slots to open up?

Based on current trends and what happened during the same period last year, I am expecting F1 visa slots to be released sometime in early to mid October. That is when the consulates typically ramp back up for the next wave of student applicants. You do not have a long wait ahead of you — but you do need to be ready the moment those slots appear.

What you should do right now while you wait

There are two things to focus on while slots are scarce. First, pay your visa fees now if you have not already — you do not want to be scrambling with payment steps when a slot suddenly opens. Second, keep tracking the portal regularly. Slots can appear and disappear quickly, so staying on top of it gives you the best chance of grabbing one as soon as they are released.
