Why university selection carries more weight now
Now that you can book a US visa appointment 365 days in advance, university selection has become a critical part of your visa strategy — not just an academic one. The university you choose, and the one you present at your visa interview, sends a strong signal to the consular officer. So it is worth giving this real thought rather than treating it as an afterthought.
Four to five parameters I recommend you evaluate
In my experience, there are four to five parameters you should be considering when deciding which university to go with for your visa interview. Here is what each one means in practice.
1. Course curriculum and specialisation
Look closely at the course itself. What specialisation is the university offering you? Are there unique subjects that set this programme apart from others? Being able to speak clearly and confidently about what you will be studying — and why that specific curriculum fits your goals — makes a real difference when the officer asks why you chose this particular school.

Scholarships significantly improve your chance of getting a visa. If a university is offering you a scholarship, that is a strong factor in your favour — it shows the institution has invested in you, and it also reduces the financial concern that officers sometimes raise. Check whether any of your admit offers include a scholarship before deciding which university to go with.
3. University ranking
How does the university rank compared to other institutions in the US? Ranking is not everything, but it is one of the factors an officer may consider when assessing whether your choice of school is credible and well-reasoned. A higher-ranked programme — especially one that aligns with your stated career goals — adds weight to your application.
4. Industry exposure
Think about the kind of practical exposure you will get. Does the university give you access to a major city and its professional ecosystem? Does it offer industry projects, capstone projects, or strong employer connections? Industry exposure is something you can speak to directly in your interview, and it shows the officer that you have thought carefully about the professional value of your programme — not just the degree itself.
