A note from Shachi

Exchange programs sound straightforward. But the visa interview isn't always.
Officers see J1 applicants as potential overstays, especially when the program is long, the stipend is low, or the return plan is vague. If you can't clearly explain what you'll do, who's sponsoring you, and why you'll go home after, you're at risk. And the two-year home residency requirement adds another layer of complexity most applicants don't prepare for.
I built my STAMP Method around the five things every officer evaluates: your Story, your Ties, your Answers, your Money, and your Papers. For J1 applicants, the key is showing the exchange is genuine and your return plan is concrete.
If your program matters to you, your preparation should match. Let's talk.

Sound familiar?
Exchange visas come with unique challenges
"It's a research fellowship, not a job"
Officers can't always tell the difference. You need to explain your program clearly.
"The program is 12+ months"
Longer programs face more scrutiny. Officers want to know you'll actually leave when it ends.
"The stipend is low, how do I prove I can afford it?"
Low stipends mean officers question whether you'll work illegally to supplement income.
"I'm not sure about the two-year rule"
The two-year home residency requirement can complicate future visa plans. You need to understand it.
"My DS-2019 has different dates than my actual plans"
Any mismatch between your documents and verbal answers raises red flags.
Common pitfalls
Mistakes that get exchange visitors refused
Can't explain the exchange program simply
If the officer doesn't understand what you'll do in 30 seconds, they assume it's not a real program.
No concrete return plan
"I'll go back and continue my career" without specifics signals immigration intent.
Unaware of two-year home residency requirement
Not knowing whether it applies to you makes you look unprepared, or worse, like you're trying to avoid it.
Stipend doesn't cover living expenses
If you can't explain how you'll fund your stay, officers wonder if you'll work illegally.
My approach
My STAMP Method - Five Pillars That Get You Approved
S - Story
What's the exchange about? We build a clear narrative around your program, your sponsor, and what you'll gain, so the officer sees a genuine exchange, not a work-around.
T - Ties
What brings you back after the program? We identify concrete ties, a job waiting, research commitments, family, that prove you'll honor the exchange terms.
A - Answers
Can you explain your program in 15 seconds? We structure every answer, program purpose, sponsor relationship, and return plan, practiced in mock interviews.
M - Money
Can you afford the stay? Whether it's a stipend, fellowship, or self-funded, we make sure the officer understands your financial plan in one sentence.
P - Papers
DS-2019, sponsor letter, financial proof, they must all tell the same story. We review every document for consistency.

| STORY - What's the exchange about? | Generic program description | "Just explain your DS-2019" | Clear narrative connecting your program, goals, and career back home |
| TIES - What brings you back? | Not addressed | Not their focus | Concrete return plan: job waiting, research commitment, family |
| ANSWERS - Can you say it in 15s? | Long academic explanations | "Tell them about your research" | 15-second structured answers practiced in mock interviews |
| MONEY - Can you afford the stay? | "Show your stipend letter" | Covered in DS-2019 | Financial plan the officer grasps in one sentence |
| PAPERS - Document consistency | Can't review your documents | Only DS-2019 provided | DS-2019, sponsor letter, and financials cross-checked |

Questions you probably have
Ideally 4-6 weeks before your interview. That gives enough time for document review, answer building, and multiple mock interviews. If you're late, don't worry. Our Core package works as a 3-day crash course.
No one can guarantee approval. The final decision rests with the consular officer. What we guarantee: you walk into your interview fully prepared, with clear answers, strong documentation, and real confidence. We've coached 2,500+ applicants one-on-one, and we are always transparent that no one can promise a specific outcome.
You'll experience a realistic simulation of a U.S. visa interview. I play the role of the consular officer using real questions specific to your visa type and profile. After the mock, you receive the recording so you can review your performance and refine your answers before the real thing.
Almost certainly. Over the years, I've worked with applicants across every visa category and situation — prior refusals, complex employment histories, complicated finances, applications from high-scrutiny consulates, dependent visas, and more. If you're unsure whether your situation is something I can help with, just message us on WhatsApp. I'm happy to discuss before you commit to anything.
All sessions are online via Google Meet or Zoom, so you can prepare from anywhere in India or the world. We also record each mock interview for your own self-review, which you can't get in-person at the embassy.
We accept UPI, bank transfer, Razorpay (for INR payments), and Stripe (for USD payments). All prices are listed in both USD and INR. Payment is collected after an initial consultation to ensure the service is right for you.
