The New Visa Portal: What You Need to Know Before You Book
The US Embassy in India moved to a new visa portal last year — it is called usvisascheduling.com. If you are booking your slot for the Fall 2024 intake, this is the portal you will be using. I want to be upfront with you: the new portal is a little complicated, and it does have errors and glitches. If you get stuck at one or more steps during the process, that is completely normal. Do not panic. You can call the customer support line or raise a ticket directly from inside the portal. My strong advice right now, even before slots open, is to create your account on the new portal, get familiar with the interface, and have everything ready to go. When slots open, they go fast — and you do not want to be fumbling with a new login on that day.
The DS-160 Rule That Has Changed — And Will Cost You If You Miss It
This is the change I see catching the most people off guard. Previously, you could use a dummy DS-160 number to book your appointment and then fill in a proper form later. That is no longer allowed. Under the new rule, the DS-160 confirmation page and the DS-160 number on your appointment booking must match exactly. If they do not match, you will not be allowed to proceed with your biometric or interview. What this means practically is that you need a properly filled, reviewed, and submitted DS-160 form before you book your appointment — not after. Take the time to fill it thoroughly, check it carefully for errors, and only then submit it and move on to booking your slot.
If You Deferred From Spring 2024 to Fall 2024 — Do These Three Things
I know many of you deferred because almost no slots opened for the Spring intake. If that is you, here are the three specific things you need to do right now.
1. Get an Updated I-20
Request your university for a new I-20 that reflects Fall 2024 dates. Your old I-20 with Spring dates is not sufficient.
2. Fill a Brand New DS-160 Form
Even if you filled your DS-160 perfectly last time, do not reuse it. Fill a completely new form using the details on your new I-20. And if there are any gaps in your profile — for example, time between degrees or between semesters — this is a good moment to do internships, certifications, or courses to address that gap and mention it in the new form.

Book a Mock Interview3. You Do Not Need to Pay the Visa Fee Again
If you already paid the visa fee for your Spring application, you can use the same payment for Fall. In the visa portal, close any old applications, start a new application, and click on 'Claim Payment' to apply your previous payment to the new booking. You will not be charged again.
When Will Fall 2024 Slots Open — and How to Book One Without 24/7 Monitoring
Expected Slot Windows
Based on trends from the past two-plus years and a recent official update from the embassy, fresh applicants can expect slots to open somewhere in the April-end to July window — so April end, May, June, and July. These may come in small batches periodically, or in two or three larger bulk releases. If you have a previous refusal, expect slots to open a little later — roughly June end through August. On the topic of previous refusals: there is no official one-year ban. There never has been. If you had a refusal in the last year, you are still eligible to get a slot this cycle — just make sure your preparation is solid.
How to Track Slots Without Refreshing All Day
Booking a slot means monitoring for availability — and that is stressful if you are doing it manually. A tool I recommend is called Easy Slot Booking. It sends you an alert on your phone the moment slots open, so you do not have to watch the portal around the clock. When you get the alert, you log into the portal and book. The alerts are clear — they tell you exactly how many slots have opened and whether they are for fresh or refused candidates. Using it is straightforward: download the Telegram app and set up your account, then sign up for Easy Slot Booking through the link in the description below, select your visa category and your preferred paid plan, and you will receive a list of Telegram channels to follow — separate channels for interview slots and biometric slots, organised by location. After that, you simply wait. The link to sign up is in the description.
Interview Preparation: What Fall 2024 Officers Are Focusing On
Do not let all the slot-booking activity push interview prep to the back of your mind. Visa interviews are getting harder every intake, and if you receive a refusal, the waiting period before you can try again is significant. Start preparing early. Based on the trends I have been tracking for Fall 2024, visa officers are going to focus heavily on three areas: your course, your university, and your funding. These are the areas where you need clear, confident, well-structured answers. Make sure you understand your program deeply, know why you chose your specific university, and can explain your funding clearly and without hesitation.
Ways to Prepare With Me
If you want structured, one-on-one preparation, I offer two main programs. The 7-Day Program is the most detailed option — it covers seven sessions that take you from profile analysis to DS-160 review to framing your answers to multiple mock interviews. If you have a complicated profile, previous rejections, or you simply want to give yourself the best possible chance on your first attempt, this is the program I would point you toward. The Core Package is a shorter option — it includes a DS-160 review, one session to structure your answers, and a mock interview. Both programs are open for enrollment now. You can find the details on the packages page.
