What is a 221g and why are so many students receiving one now?
Gone are the days when the officer would simply take your passport and say your visa is approved. Now, even when your visa is approved, the officer is required to issue you a slip called a 221g and ask you to keep your social media profiles public. A 221g — also called administrative processing or a background check — means the consulate needs to verify your social media handles to confirm there is nothing that could threaten US national security. So the approval itself is not in question. The officer keeps your passport, hands you the slip, and the system shows your status as 'refused' while that check is underway.
How long is 221g taking to clear in 2025?
Looking at F and J visa interviews that took place over the last two weeks, I observed that the time for a 221g to clear — meaning the time for your status to change from 'refused' to 'issued' — was anywhere between 3 and 10 days. That is a fairly wide range, and the location of your consulate appears to be one of the key factors driving the difference.

From what I have seen, consulates like Mumbai and Kolkata appear to be clearing 221g cases more quickly and updating statuses faster than consulates like Delhi and Chennai. A likely reason is volume — Delhi, Chennai, and Hyderabad handle a significantly larger number of visa interviews compared to other consulates, which can slow things down.
Should you be worried about your social media being reviewed?
Here is the reassuring part: so far, I have not come across a single case where someone received a 221g and was then rejected because of their social media profile. The review is happening across the board as a security formality, but if your social media is clean and does not raise any red flags, the expectation based on everything I have seen is that your visa will be issued within that 3 to 10 day window. Keep your profiles public as instructed, monitor your status, and try not to panic when you see 'refused' on the portal — that status is normal while the check is in progress.
