When I applied for my F1 visa in Fall 2022 — right after everything reopened in the US — I had nine years of work experience sitting on my profile. That is not a small thing to explain. Visa interviews are typically less than one minute. That is not a figure designed to scare you — it is just the reality of how the window works. You do not get a long conversation. You do not get a chance to circle back and clarify something you said poorly the first time. This is why preparation is not optional. You might have a lot of genuine, valid things to say about your background, but if you have not structured them tightly, the officer moves on before you have made your point.
How I prepared: drive the conversation
The most important thing I did was decide in advance what I wanted to say — and equally, what I was not going to say. There are things in your profile you want to highlight, and there are things you should deliberately leave out or not volunteer. Knowing the difference is what lets you drive the conversation rather than react to wherever the officer takes it. I prepared exactly what I wanted to communicate about my nine years and the change of direction I was making, so that no matter how the question was phrased, my answer landed the same way.
