The visa officer almost always starts with the basics. Expect to be asked your company's name and how long you have been with the company. These warm-up questions are straightforward, but they matter — your answers establish credibility before the harder questions arrive.
The profit and loss question — and why it sets the tone for everything
This is the question I want you to prepare the most carefully. The officer asked: do you handle profit and loss in the company, and if yes, how so? What struck me about this exchange is that the officer was not satisfied with a simple yes or no. He wanted to understand exactly how the applicant goes about managing profit and loss in practice. The way this question was handled set the tone for the entire rest of the interview. If you can answer this with confidence and specific detail — not a rehearsed definition, but a real explanation of your day-to-day role — the officer's attitude toward you shifts. You come across as a genuine manager, not someone reading from a job description.

After the profit and loss discussion, the interview moved into a set of questions that are fairly standard for L1A applicants. You will likely be asked about your U.S. salary, whether you are going for a project or a product, your U.S. designation, and the details of your U.S. bank. The officer also asked about direct and indirect reports — specifically how many direct and indirect reports you have. This is an important question for an L1A because it speaks directly to your managerial capacity, so know your numbers precisely.
One tip from the interview that is easy to overlook
Here is something practical that came up at the end of this interview experience and is worth noting. The officer verified the applicant's passport and also checked the spouse's passport — specifically to confirm that the applicant's name was mentioned in the spouse section. If you are travelling with or being accompanied by your spouse, make sure your name appears correctly in the spouse section of their passport before you walk into that interview room.
