How the interview opens: company basics and tenure
The visa officer starts with straightforward questions to establish the basics. Expect to be asked your company's name and how long you have been with the company. These feel simple, but they are your warm-up — answer them confidently and without hesitation, because the officer is already forming an impression of how you carry yourself.
The question that sets the tone: profit and loss responsibility
This is the moment that matters most in the L1A interview, at least based on what I have seen. The officer asked directly: do you handle profit and loss in the company, and if yes, how so? Notice that second part — how so. The officer was not just checking whether you have P&L responsibility on paper. He wanted to understand exactly how you go about it in practice. What decisions do you make? How do you track it? What levers do you control? I genuinely believe that how you handle this one question sets the tone for the rest of the interview. If you give a vague or rehearsed-sounding answer, the officer will probe harder on everything that follows. If you answer it with specifics and clarity, the rest of the conversation tends to flow more smoothly.
Compensation and the nature of your U.S. role
After the P&L question, the officer moved on to your U.S. salary — this is a common question in L1A interviews, so have a clear number ready. You will also be asked whether you are going to the U.S. for a project or a product. Think about this distinction in advance: the answer shapes how the officer understands the scope and permanence of your role.

One of the more important questions in this interview was: how many direct and indirect reports do you have? For an L1A — which is for managers and executives — your ability to demonstrate that you actually manage people is critical. Know your numbers precisely. Direct reports are the people who report to you. Indirect reports are the people who report to them. Do not approximate or fumble this answer.
The remaining standard questions
The rest of the questions covered your U.S. designation, the specifics of your role in the U.S., and details about the U.S. bank account. These are fairly standard and should not catch you off guard if you have reviewed your petition and support documents.
One tip worth remembering at the end
Here is something that stood out from this interview experience: the officer verified in the spouse's passport that the applicant's name was mentioned in the spouse section. If you are bringing your family on dependent visas, make sure the dependent documents clearly reflect the relationship — including your name appearing where it should in your spouse's passport or supporting paperwork. It is a small detail that the officer will actually check.
