Why what you wear actually matters at the visa window
There are no official guidelines from the US Embassy or Consulate telling you what to wear. No checklist, no dos and don'ts issued by the government. But it is still a formal interview, the officer across the window is usually dressed formally, and you want to fit into that environment. What you wear signals your background, your qualifications, and the role you are travelling to the US for. Beyond that, one thing I notice very commonly is that visa officers do not only look at the person they are interviewing — they also glance along the line at who is next. That glance is your first impression, and it happens before you even open your mouth. Getting your clothes and grooming right takes care of that moment entirely.
What to wear for a B1 visa interview
The B1 visa covers travel to the US for business purposes — attending client meetings, internal meetings, trainings, workshops, conferences, and similar events. For this category, business casuals work well. Business casual means professional-looking clothing that is not strict formals.
B1 — men
You have a few solid options here. A half-sleeve shirt in a light colour paired with dark jeans or trousers and closed shoes works well. So does a light-coloured T-shirt with an informal blazer, dark pants or jeans, and cloth shoes. If you want to play it completely safe, a proper formal shirt in a light colour with trousers and closed shoes is always a strong choice. If you do go with jeans, stick to darker shades — avoid light, faded, or ripped jeans entirely.
B1 — women
For women, a formal top with trousers or dark jeans is a great look, and adding an informal blazer elevates it further. Indian wear is absolutely fine for a B1 interview — a formal-looking kurta in lighter colours paired with pants or a churidar reads well. The key word across all of these is 'formal-looking', regardless of the style you choose.
What to wear for an H1B or L1B visa interview
The H1B and L1B are the two most popular visas that allow you to live and work in the US, typically issued for three years with the option to bring your family. For these categories, the standard goes up: you need strict formals. Business casuals — which are perfectly fine for a B1 — should be avoided entirely here.
H1B and L1B — men
Think of a light-coloured full-sleeve shirt — beige, cream, or white — paired with proper formal trousers and clean closed shoes that match the rest of the outfit. Lighter shirt colours work better here because they look more elegant and are less distracting than darker shades. And when I say formal trousers, I mean formal trousers — no jeans, no semi-formal chinos. The entire outfit should read as completely formal.
H1B and L1B — women
You have a good range of choices. For Western formals, a formal shirt or top with a skirt or pants is a strong look. For Indian formals, a formal-looking kurta with a churidar or pants works well, and a saree is also an excellent option if you are comfortable wearing one.

The L1A is a managerial visa, and how you present yourself carries more weight here than in other categories. With an L1B or H1B, the officer can ask you technical questions to assess your expertise. With an L1A, there are no technical questions to fall back on — so how you carry yourself, how you speak, and how you look all become even more important. My advice for the L1A is to take formals up a notch and plan for a proper business suit.
L1A — men
A light-coloured shirt with matching trousers and a blazer, paired with closed shoes, is the ideal look. Alternatively, a formal shirt and pants with a well-matched formal blazer also works. Do not think about jeans at all for this category. As for ties — that is a personal choice. If you are wearing a blazer, a tie is not required. But if a tie makes you feel more confident and you wear them regularly, go ahead and add one.
L1A — women
Western formals work beautifully — a formal shirt or top with trousers or a formal skirt, paired with a blazer. Formal dresses are also a strong option. For Indian wear, go for formal kurtas in lighter colours like beige, cream, or light pink — these shades look more elegant and formal. I would suggest pairing the kurta with straight formal pants rather than a churidar, because formal pants tend to give a sharper, more polished look at an L1A interview. And if you love wearing sarees and feel confident in one, they are a wonderful choice too.
Three grooming tips that most people overlook
Getting the clothes right is only part of the picture. Here are three things I always tell my clients that go beyond what you wear.
1. Pay attention to hair, nails, and scent
Hair and nails are two things that tend to get ignored in the rush of visa preparation — and they really should not be. When you are standing just a couple of feet from the visa officer, both are very visible and very noticeable. Make sure your hair is well-groomed and your nails are clean and tidy. On scent: a light, pleasant fragrance works in your favour, but avoid anything overpowering. You do not want to be memorable for the wrong reason.
2. Take the initiative to greet the officer
When you walk up to the window, do not wait for the officer to acknowledge you first. Make eye contact, carry a slight smile, and greet them — a simple 'Good morning, sir' or 'Good afternoon, ma'am' is completely sufficient. You do not need to address them as 'Visa Officer'. Taking the initiative to greet sets a confident, polished tone from the very first second.
3. Modulate your voice to match the room
Pay attention to the environment you are in. If the consulate hall is noisy and chaotic, speak a little louder so you are clearly heard. If the room is quiet and calm, keep your volume measured — you do not want to come across as someone who is shouting in a quiet space. Reading the room and adjusting accordingly shows composure, which is exactly what you want to project.
