The old payment process — and why it caused so many problems
Until recently, paying the fraud detection fee for an L1 blanket visa was genuinely cumbersome. Your options were a demand draft, a credit card payment at the window, or carrying cash to the consulate on the day of your interview. I have seen so many applicants struggle with this — uncertainty about whether the payment would go through, last-minute stress at the consulate, confusion about the exact amount. It was an unnecessary headache on top of an already stressful day.
What has changed: the new online payment system
The US Embassy has recently introduced a new online payment system that removes all of that hassle. A few days before your interview, you will receive an email from pay.gov — sent to the same email address you registered on the visa portal. This email contains a payment link. When you click it, you fill in your details and choose from three payment options: PayPal, Venmo, or a debit or credit card. You can complete the payment well in advance of your interview date.

Once you have paid, take a printout of both the original payment email and the payment confirmation. That is all you need to show at the consulate — no draft, no cash, no card machine at the window. Keep both printouts with your other interview documents so nothing gets missed on the day.
A note directly from visa officers
This is not just a convenience update — visa officers are actively encouraging applicants to use the online system. I had a couple of applicants go for their interviews in the last few days, and they were specifically told by the officers to inform their colleagues to look out for this email and pay online. That tells you how strongly the consulate is pushing this new process. If you have an L1 blanket visa interview coming up, keep a close eye on your registered email and do not ignore any message from pay.gov.
